$\begingroup$ What does CPA mean? Or did you mean OPA (optical parametric amplifier)? $\endgroup$– flippiefanusCommented Oct 30, 2022 at 4:17

$\begingroup$ @flippiefanus CPA stands for Chirped Pulse Amplifier $\endgroup$– SounCommented Oct 30, 2022 at 10:23

The seed is the signal that the amplifier amplifies. To control the output, you control the seed. The pump provides the power to the amplifier.

$\begingroup$ is it true that the pump creates the population inversion, and then the seed is amplified by stimulated emission? $\endgroup$– SounCommented Oct 31, 2022 at 12:52

$\begingroup$ @Soun Yes, that's how a laser works. Some seed themselves with spontaneous emission, though. $\endgroup$ Commented Oct 31, 2022 at 13:08
