I am an absolute neophyte regarding physics. But I keep hearing about cold fusion and how great it will be. But it never seems to be accomplished. What are the challenges and will it ever become a reality?

Note: As I am a physics neophyte, an answer a layperson can understand would be appreciated, if possible.
