In the solutions to the questions Kevin Zhou writes in boldface: "the downwind case. [...] power is transferred from the wheels to the propeller." It's unclear however, whether Derek Muller understands this explanation. From the youtube video I cannot tell whether Muller (and the people who built the vehicle) understand what is going on. They appear to be on the wrong track.
Jun 22, 2021 at 21:47 | comment | added | d_b | Before answering how this can happen, I think it should be noted that there is ongoing debate as to whether it does happen at all. I refer you to Derek Muller's (twitter.com/veritasium) and physicist Alex Kusenko's (twitter.com/alexkusenko) Twitter pages. Muller has made a $10k wager with Kusenko in this matter, and as far as I can tell the bet has not yet been settled.

Jun 1, 2021 at 18:33 | comment | added | jalex | @Cleonis - I was going to try to create a mathematical model of the vehicle, but then I read this (aviation.stackexchange.com/a/10032) and decided it would be too difficult to generalize/simplify.
