Jan 23, 2011 at 16:23 comment added Noldorin No worries. I've been busy enough here too, so I probably won't get around to considering it properly for a little while yet. I'll keep an eye out for edits though.
Jan 23, 2011 at 7:06 comment added Colin K @Noldorin: Thank you very much for the accept. I do still intend to add a bit to this, but real life has been busy lately. Optical propigation simulation is very fun and interesting!
Jan 22, 2011 at 21:23 comment added Noldorin @Colin K: I've accepted your answer, since it explains the effect and gives some good background on the subject. Of course, it would still be great if you could add those "interesting details" you said you wanted to add when you get time. :) They could be very helpful when I get around to simulating this...

Jan 19, 2011 at 19:13 comment added Noldorin @Colin K: Yes, I just noticed - you're studying/working as an optical engineer! :) Thanks for the openness. I'm definitely interested in these sorts of topics. (I've been doing some light research on methods and solutions to the rendering equation recently - photon mapping, ray tracing, etc. Interesting stuff.)
Jan 19, 2011 at 18:39 comment added Colin K @Noldorin: You're talking about things very close to what I do professionally! I will be expanding this answer, but if you have other questions on this or related topics, please ask. I'd be happy for the chance to get some more good answers on here:)
Jan 19, 2011 at 18:30 comment added Noldorin Sounds great; I look forward to it. It would be interesting to simulate these optical effects computationally in fact (perhaps as an image processor), which I may well do.
Jan 19, 2011 at 18:27 comment added Colin K @Noldorin: Of course:) I do plan on adding a little bit to it though. There is a lot of interesting details that I completely ignored. It will have to wait until I get home from work though.
Jan 19, 2011 at 18:24 comment added Noldorin @Colin: Thanks for your detailed answer. I'll have a closer look at it shortly! :)
