Jan 21, 2019 at 9:43 comment added Cyclone Firstly, formally, the term enters as a centrifugal force since we are located in a rotating coordinate system: the time rate of change we observe in a rotating frame of reference is different from what it would be in an inertial frame. This additional time rate of change in the velocity field is given by the Coriolis and centrifugal forces. Here, the cause of rotation is simply that we're in Earth' frame, which rotates. The true reason why we rotate with Earth is finally gravity and the friction with the ground, but we do not care about that here. It's different from a mass on a string!

Jan 14, 2019 at 5:58 comment added user66043 my understanding is that the centrifugal force is associated with a rotating coordinate system and hence not real. The centripetal force on the other hand is associated with an object forced to move around a circle and hence very much real.
