Mar 1, 2015 at 2:34 comment added dmckee --- ex-moderator kitten Hmm ... the pictures that are drawn in the textbooks to illustrate the shell model are not to be taken seriously, but the model itself remains a good approximation to the actual way electrons fill discrete energy levels and serves to explain the basics of chemistry just fine. Of course it fails to capture the complexity of the inter-electron effects as electrons are added, but in most cases the splitting doesn't effect the shell filling order unit deep, deep into the periodic table.

Feb 28, 2015 at 19:39 comment added Jaja Well explained. I also had an idea about an equipotential volume but the fact that you mentioned there is a change in potential energy (and thus work is being done) disproved that right away. Thank you :)
