That's fair, but if you'd like $P(r,p)$ to be the probability density function instead, as in eq. (1), when you change variables you need to multiply by a suitable Jacobian factor (in this case $m^{3}$, see e.g. this Wikipedia entry). AFAIK the only reason to keep the differentials in the equations is to remember this rule.
