Actually you don't need $\frac{d}{d\lambda} \sqrt{-g_{\mu\nu}\dot{x}^\mu \dot{x}^\nu} =0$. Since $$L=\sqrt{-g_{\mu\nu}\dot{x}^ \mu \dot {x}^\nu} $$, $L^2$ also satisfies Euler-Lagrange equations. So …
