A (p-)brane is a dynamically evolving physical object that generalizes the notion of a point particle to (p) higher dimensions. A point particle can be viewed as a brane of dimension zero, a string as a brane of dimension one, and a membrane (sheet) as a brane of dimension two. Do not use for particles or strings, however, unless in comparative juxtapositions.

Sources that explain strings between two branes, where one brane ends on the other

Edit: As @OON has pointed out in the comments below, fundamental strings don't end on NS5-branes. … Would the spectrum be the same as for two intersecting D-branes? …

My questions is: What happens when there are more than one stack of D3s and more than two NS5-branes? How do we calculate the FI terms, and to which D3 stack are the FI terms associated? …

Must string models that describe 4d effective field theories always have D-branes that exten...

In string theory the D-branes give those directions that the strings are allowed to move along. The string excitations give the fields that we detect. … If so, this implies that a realistic model should always have D-branes that extend in these 4 spacetime directions. …

I understand that when a 10-dimensional superstring theory has a Dp-brane (say, extending in the $x_0, ... , x_p$ directions) we have the total conserved supercharge given by: \begin{equation} \epsi …
