# Can we apply lens makers formula when medium on either side of the lens is different?

Lens maker's formula, which is $$\frac{1}{f} = ({n_{liquid}{-1}}) [(\frac{1}{R}) - (\frac{-1}{R})]$$. Can one apply lens makers formula when medium is different on both sides? If NO, why? Should we use $$\frac{n_{2}}{v} - \frac{n_{1}}{u} = \frac{n_{2} - n_{1}}{R}$$
