I found the following image in some fusion welding lecture slides, and I was curious if anyone knew how to explain the peculiar grain structure in a fusion welded joint. Specifically, I was wondering about how these columnar grains form in the fusion zone of a fusion welded joint and how the coarseness of the grains in the heat affected zones are proportional to the distance from the fusion zone.
