I know that when you're charging by induction, it doesn't require two objects to contact for that to happen. Let's say you have two Van de Graaff generators that are initially at neutral charge. Let's call each of them A and B.

For example, you have a metal rod that's negatively charged that's applying a repulsive force on the electrons that are present on A. The electrons from A flow into B which induces A into a positively charged generator and B is induced into a negatively charged generator.

My book says that CoI is similar when you have two insulators and when you have one insulator + conductors. Why is the process similar and not the same?

I look at the figures and saw that CoI isn't any different. Another question is, if the paper sticks onto the negatively-charged rod (let's assume it's negatively-charged, does this mean that the protons from the surface of the paper will stick and the electrons will be located on the bottom of the paper? Is that what the book meant by similar? pg. 693 of Physics for Scientists & Engineers 9th Edition by Serway & Jewett
