From what I’ve learned, a single battery hooked up to a closed circuit will allow the free electrons built up at the anode of the battery to travel from the wire to the cathode of the same battery, which will react with positively charged substances that came from the reaction between the cathode and the electrolyte, as well as cations flowing through the electrolyte from the oxidation reaction in the anode, so byproducts will be formed and the reaction producing electrons will supposedly continue. But how does current flow when batteries are wired in a series circuit (positive of one battery to the negative of the other), and why is the total voltage the sum if the electrons are now going through a different terminal)?
