I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question. But my main concern is to explain the idea of background/signal in Higgs decaying to 4 leptons or 2 gammas. I am absolutely not trying to create what physicists created in 2012 at ATLAS and CMS and I am sure that my computing resources do not even come close to any of that. What I am looking for is a simple way to explain the idea of background and noise as we normally see in particle physics experiments potentially using a matlab simulation. Initially, I was thinking of creating a sine wave as my signal and a pseudorandom normal distribution random numbers as my noise, but I do not know if I understand how to link it to what statisticians did at LHC. Does anyone have any suggestion? Again, if this is not the right forum for this, I apologize. Any help would be great,
