I don't think there's any question that the most reliable model we have for the state of a real gas is our model for superheated steam - and it's not an equation, it's pages on pages of empirical data tables plus the (well-tested) assumptions that future measurements will be like past measurements and that the unknown values between data-points will be between the values at those data points.
