The scalar field $h$ would change self-energy of the fermion field $\psi$ via quantum loop processes (the simplest being the fermion field $\psi$ emitting a Higgs boson and later absorbing the same Higgs boson in a one-loop Feynman diagram). And the modified self-energy could potentially result in mass corrections to fermion $\psi$.
