Typically, the notation $I_x$ (etc) would indicate that it is an intensity, i.e. that the modulus-square has already been taken. (And, indeed, if that were not the case, then there is no guarantee that $I_{\circlearrowright} + I_{\circlearrowleft} \neq 0$, which you need in order to be able to divide by it.) | |
