Oct 7, 2021 at 10:30 comment added Liberty I am trying to understand why my calculated total work isn't equal to the piston's work. I mostly need a concept explanation.
Oct 7, 2021 at 3:22 comment added nasu So, how much do you get for the work done by the weight of the piston during this displacement? Isn't the value you indicate as answer?
Oct 7, 2021 at 3:17 comment added Liberty I assume this is an isothermal process. If the temperature is constant, then a pressure volume graph would form a triangular shape (though slightly curved). The calculations are then: (0.5 * 0.3 * 10^-5 m^3 * 0.3 * 10^4 Pa) + (5.7 * 10^4 Pa * 0.3 * 10^-5 m^3) = 0.1665 J. Net work would equal net heat flow. My issue is that the calculated work performed by the piston isn't equal to the total work calculated. You could calculate the piston work with W = Fd = (9.8 m/s * .2 kg)(0.3 * 10^-5 m^3 / (1 * 10^-3 m^2) = 0.00588 J

Oct 7, 2021 at 0:26 comment added David White @Liberty, it would help if you showed your calculations of piston work and total work.
Oct 6, 2021 at 23:34 comment added Chet Miller Maybe they are referring to the net energy transferred to the gas, which also includes heat transferred from the gas to the bath. However, such process would be isothermal, so that then net would be zero.
Oct 6, 2021 at 21:07 comment added Liberty If I thought about it by intuition I would conclude that they are the same, but when I estimate a pressure volume graph, then I get that the pistons work is very little compared to the total work. I estimated the total work to be 0.1665 J using triangle and rectangular areas. While the calculated work done by the piston is only 0.006 J. There has to be something I am missing.

Oct 6, 2021 at 19:53 comment added Liberty What is the total work and how do these quantities related?
