There are microbes living deep in stones (I remember having read some articles about gold mines in South Africa having found bacteria (or archaea?) that live some 3000km beneath the surface, getting no carbon exchange with the atmosphere. On the other hand, most live as we know it gets its carbon from and to the atmosphere).
