Dec 18, 2017 at 18:14 comment added FraSchelle And the argument about the imaginary part goes as follow : since $\left\langle n|n\right\rangle =1$ one has $d\left\langle n|n\right\rangle =0\Rightarrow\left\langle dn|n\right\rangle +\left\langle n|dn\right\rangle =\left\langle dn|n\right\rangle +\left\langle dn|n\right\rangle ^{\ast}=0\Rightarrow\Re\left\{ \left\langle dn|n\right\rangle \right\} =0$ so $\left\langle dn|n\right\rangle $ is at best purely imaginary if it doesn't vanish.
