Nov 14, 2012 at 20:35 comment added Art Brown not to worry; I think you have bigger fish to cold-fuse right now...

Sep 6, 2012 at 1:01 comment added Art Brown I think there is a problem with the second of your simultaneous delta/delta1 equations. One way to see it: let M0=0. In that limit, the rhs should be C/3gc, with gc=M1/R1^2, the acceleration at the core surface, but that's not what you get.
Aug 21, 2012 at 0:00 comment added Ron Maimon @AlanSE: I agree, a gross nonuniformity would screw everything up, but it should show up as a nonuniformity in earthquake data, and I didn't see anything nonuniform. Even if there is a density nonuniformity, it would have to be very large to make any change in the conclusion, the greater asphericity of the core is robust.
Aug 20, 2012 at 19:08 comment added Alan Rominger I believe your calculations are sufficiently accurate for your conclusion, but haven't we neglected alternative physical explanations? Instead of the core having 9% more eccentricity, couldn't it just be that polar regions have more dense material? Planetary formation isn't understood perfectly and for the level of difference we're talking about, it would seem plausible for it to be accounted by material distribution. The eccentricity of Earth's surface is an empirical fact, but beyond that, it's unclear what unknowns are appropriate to adjust to fit the data IMO.
