We have some understanding and proposed mechanisms, depending much on the inflation model one considers. If you have enough background in cosmology, this review is very comprehensive. It's nice that recent observation of the CMB may help constrain models of inflation and reheating; the review does not include the most recent ones though.

Apr 9, 2012 at 15:03 comment added Zo the Relativist The inflaton loses energy, and this gets transferred to the universe. Inflation is actually less weird, at least from a conservation of energy standpoint, than dark energy is.
