Aug 4, 2015 at 16:15 comment added ProfRob @KyleOman Yes, there are even (compact star) binaries with periods of minutes. They didn't form that way and neither did W UMa. IM Mon is detached I think (for the moment).
Aug 4, 2015 at 15:57 comment added Kyle Oman W UMa has an orbital period of ~8 hours, which puts it at closer separation than IM Mon (well, both are likely contact binaries, hard to get closer than that). +1, of course :)
