There is a black hole, called Gargantua, featured in the recent blockbuster Interstellar. I understand why the debrisaccretion disk is bright (friction), but why does it seem to be flowing in two perpendicular directions?

I acknowledge it may just be a design-based decision made by the special effects team to make things look pretty, but perhaps there is an in-universe explanation I cannot conjure.
