We can either use the complex version, the rather unfamilliar ${}^{\mathbf C}\mathrm{SO}(3,1) = \mathrm{SO}(4,\mathbf C)$, or choose an appropriate real version of it, which is exactly $\mathrm{SO}(4)$.
