Thanks for your very detailed analysis! I find this explanation compelling because there is both a high and a low frequency chirp in the simulated sound, just like the recording I posted. I can hear these chirps audibly in the simulated sound and also see them when I plot a spectrogram. I'm wondering if you can say something about whether the position of the source and listener matters? Next time I go to a racquetball court, I'm going to try to reproduce this effect by clapping in order to confirm this explanation and I'm wondering where to stand.

Thanks for your answer. I wasn't the one who downvoted, but I would say that the "standard" definition of a phase transition includes second order transitions.

@MaxGraves I would imagine that the density of the fluid could be an order parameter, as in a liquid-gas transition. The fraction of molecules that are ionized might work as well.
