comment Turn-on delay time for Laser diode
The turn on delay or soft-start is by design and depends on the laser current controller. As far as I know, it has nothing to do with the diode laser itself. It is not so much as a delay as it is a slow ramping up of the current. This is done because transient currents can easily destroy an LD.

comment What does physics study?
@kleingordon: What moves through spacetime when an electric dipole interacts with a photon field? The mechanistic view is archaic. Field Theory is the accepted modern interpretation. Manishearth: I'd suggest you take a look at this article:->Can a Biologist Fix a radio?

comment What does physics study?
I'd have to disagree with the Wiki's definition/description because it seems to offer a mechanistic view. In my opinion, physics is the study of interactions between objects.

comment Does sending data down a fiber optic cable take longer if the cable is bent?
The polarization certainly changes, but the time of travel does not. You have to think in terms of fields and not billiard balls bouncing around. Changing the length of the fiber will certainly change the time of arrival/detection.

comment Cleaning Already Mounted Microspheres on an AFM
The safest way would be to rinse it with DI water followed by pure ethanol. Trying something exotic may lead to destruction of the AFM probe, which can be very expensive.

The AFM tip may get messed up if uses strong etching chemicals.
