Compatibility of economics and physics? Doesn't this depend on liquidity and transaction costs? Any real-life examples? |

Can we have non continuous models of reality? Why don't we have them? The Axiom of Choice isn't required to define the reals or to define continuous functions. |

Why are extra dimensions necessary? Mark, I got that example by misreading en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-body_problem. It's not really wrong (e.g. it could describe a moving, spinning sphere at a certain temperature). I deleted my previous comment and I have decided to leave my answer as-is. |

Why are extra dimensions necessary? I think those who have been interpreting this strictly as a string theory question are reading a little too much into it. It's not clear whether "BS" stands for bosonic strings or something else. |

Lightning and nuclear fusion anna's first link says that the gamma rays are produced 70 seconds before the lightning strike. The second link says something similar. That seems quite odd! |

Why is global conservation of energy not considered a tautology? Luboš, in mathematics, theorems and tautologies are not the same thing. A theorem is a tautology in the form of an implication whose precedent is some conjunction of axioms. For example, it is not possible to prove that arithmetic is consistent without using even stronger axioms such as those of set theory. In that sense, the consistency of arithmetic is open, because it is falsifiable. On the other hand, there is no reason to doubt the consistency of first-order logic itself. You are certainly right that everyone would be screwed! mathpages.com/home/kmath347/kmath347.htm |

Why are extra dimensions necessary? Note that the product of a 3-sphere and a 1-sphere is not the same thing as a 4-sphere, nor is it a 4-torus. So in some sense the extra dimension is topologically distinct, independently of how it might be turned into a differentiable manifold. |
