@ChrisWhite I'm confused by what you mean. Are you saying it is possible to actually draw the interference fringes by hand? How? Aren't they extremely small (small as in, smaller than the wavelength of visible light)?

Could you elaborate on how the FEL creates a coherent beam? I understand there is clearly a difference, but synchrotron light sources use insertion devices too, right? Does it have anything to do with electron "bunching?" How are bunches formed/the e-beam modulated? How does it differ in either case? How does a wiggler differ from an undulator?
