@DanielSank: See here. The short version: vowel perception is primarily based on the frequencies of the first two formants (peaks in the spectral envelope). The lowest formant will vary from about 200 Hz to about 800 Hz depending on the vowel, while the second-lowest varies from about 800 Hz to about 2000 Hz.
