I think you are totally right on the slightly adjust the plane of motion of the mass, which means the hand(source of tension force) kept changing. That probably would explain why the ball would rotating in a (fake) circular motion. Cool :)! Buy anyway just for personal curiosity would you also be able to show me how the forces acting on the ball cancel out each other and maintain a centripetal force on it? :P

In the picture with the tree, we'd assume that the sunlight is shining on the tree from left hand side don't we? I think the position of the light to the apple should be right.
