You must have calculated inertia using $\int dm r^2$, where $r$ is the perpendicular dist. from an axis. Well, the position of center of mass is given by $\int dm \vec r$, where $\vec r$ is the position vector of an elementary mass $dm$. Maybe that helps!

In the second case, you cannot say $dA=2\pi(b-a)dz$, because even if the resistivity is constant radially, the resistance changes because the area through which the current is passing increases with every increment of $dr$. The equation @Ali suggests for $dA$ is correct and it will give you a dual integral, first through $r$ fro every $dz$ and then through $z$

Just like @annav describes, we usually approximate walking distances to "5 minutes away" or "10 minutes away". It's extremely similar to using light year as a measure of distance. If they are teenagers, you could joke about describing distances as "2 or 3 songs away" where 1 "song" is approximately 3 minutes!

@Jonathan. ,if the spring is stretched to a point where the spring force exceeds the gravitational pull, the friction will act down the plane. Remember that friction always tries to oppose relative motion or the tendency of relative motion. Usually, we can calculate the net force due to all other forces except, and say that friction will act opposite to the net force vector. But beware, this only works if all the other forces are independent of the friction force.
