comment How can one calculate the distance a particular sound will travel?
There won't be a definitive point where the wave will "stop". The wave's intensity would exponentially die down with distance, and it greatly depends on the conditions of the medium it is travelling through.

comment Atwood machine problem
The impulse might have deformed the pulley a bit(compressed it), like an inelastic collision. That deformation will produce heat, which leads to loss of mechanical energy.

comment Constant Velocity 'Force'?
Why do you feel it is "actually not a force"? Is it because you feel the force doesn't cause any acceleration to the body it hits? That is not because there is no force, but because all the forces acting on that body cancel out.

comment Period of small oscillations
Given small vertical oscillations, you can assume the motion to be simple harmonic. Then the time period would be given by $2\pi/\omega$.

comment Determine if an object is in orbit
@MrUniverse, If you want to plot a perfect trajectory of an object under influence of multiple massive bodies, you'll have to solve the kinematical equations using newtonian gravity, which is possible(I think) but tough and no general solution usually exists. So you will have to compute the trajectory for every case separately.

comment Determine if an object is in orbit
@dmckee, you can make it a multibody situation by making some assumptions, like multiple point like satellites(negligible mass) orbiting around a massive body(earth). In that case you can neglect the gravitational effect of the satellites on each other, and the program can still be a very useful real world simulation.
