Today, Newton´s birthday, I read an article posted in the arXiv by Nicholas Kollerstrom http://www.arxiv.org/abs/1212.2666 That basically claims that Newton did not invent Calculus. The article does not cite many works. It would be a major break from my understanding of the history of science if it was to true.

Question: Does any one know of other historians having the same historical take as this article of Kollerstrom? Anything that actually got published in a peer reviewed journal would be preferable.

I thought it was understaood that Newton's calculus was incomplete and less than rigorous in places and that Liebnitz was better on both points. Are we talking about that or something else? – dmckee♦ Dec 25 '12 at 21:43
There were few independent people developed calculus at the time. Usually people only talk about Newtons because he applied it to practical physics problems and therefore is more well known than the others. – hwlau Dec 26 '12 at 2:44
