The given data is : An elevator starts from rest and is uniformly accelerating at 2m/s2 . After 1 second , a person throws up a ball with initial velocity 4m/s. The hands of the thrower remain in the same position

Questions : 1. Find the time after which he catches the ball ( with respect to elevator) 2. Displacement of the ball from the time of being thrown to being cuaght (with respect to ground) 3. Distance covered from the time of being thrown to being cuaght (with respect to ground)

Please give workings as well (is the value of acceleration also relative?)

Can you generate equation for the position of the elevator with respect to the ground? What will the initial velocity of the ball be? Can you use that to generate an equation for the initial position of the ball relative to the ground? When are these equal? – Jerry Schirmer Jul 24 '12 at 14:50

The elevator starts from rest from the ground itself , i just wanted to know wheter or not the acceleration of the ball and elevator are relative or not – Daksh Jul 24 '12 at 14:56
this is just a conceptual problem .I have with me two values of a as a = -g = -10m/s^2 and acc. of ball with respect to elevator as a(BE) = aB -aE = -10-2 = -12m/s^2 , which one of these should I use? – Daksh Jul 24 '12 at 14:57
