# What kinds of reactions happen when bubbling air through water?

Mostly I have seen air bubbling used to remove impurities in the water itself, like exemplified in this course packet.

This is called "Sparging," but I have yet to learn much about transfer between the air (constituents) and water.

Most of the material I read in this regard is focused on purifying the water. Probably because there is so much material in this regard, it's hard to find material on what is removed from the air.

"wet scrubbers" are used to clean air, but do so by misting the dirty air/gas with water droplets.

I'm thinking particularly about the air in a city, so:

1. It seems like suspended particulate would be trapped on the water interface. I presume size is the major factor, with larger particles sticking easiest? Or is there a threshold to consider?
2. $NO_2$
3. $CO$
4. $S_2$, $H_2 SO_4$
5. VOCs like $H_3$, $CH_4$, xylene, etc
