Can we scatter the lightning before it hits the ground?Can we scatter the lightning by connecting many wires to a lightning rod?

Sorry, but this really seems unclear. What do you mean by scattering? (Also, lightning bolts actually move upward from the ground, if that makes any difference) – David Zaslavsky♦ Jun 15 '11 at 7:13
Well... Lightning is one special type of discharge where one electrode is cloud and second one is ground, another cloud or different area of the same cloud. When two charged clouds are above each other answer is yes - Lightning is heading towards the ground but terminates above. When the lightning goes from cloud to the ground there's only theoretical way how to terminate it before hitting the ground. The atmosphere must contain enough chemicals used in high power switches that stops discharge immediately. But it's impossible. – Crowley Jun 15 '11 at 7:18
